The historic Yamashiro restaurant and its surrounding 7.3-acre Hollywood Mountain property have been put on the market with an asking price of $100 million. Owned by a company led by producers Elie Samaha and Steven Markoff, the Japanese-themed site has been featured in numerous films and TV shows, including “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Kill Bill.”

Avison Young, the brokerage firm handling the sale, highlights the property’s potential for various low-density developments. Peter Sherman, Avison Young’s principal and U.S. Capital Markets leader, suggests possible future uses such as a museum, foundation, private compound, or resort.

The main building, a 20,432 square foot structure built in 1914 as a private residence, is protected due to its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. The property also features a small residential complex, a Japanese garden, and a 600-year-old pagoda.

While the Yamashiro restaurant continues to thrive, the new owners will have the option to maintain its operations or repurpose the space. Sherman notes that up to 280,000 square feet of additional development could be added to the site.
The property last changed hands in 2016, selling for $40 million to a Chinese hotel operator. This listing comes on the heels of the adjacent Magic Castle property’s $50 million sale in 2022 to video game entrepreneur Randy Pitchford.

Avison Young’s team handling the listing includes Sherman, Chris Bonbright, and Chase Gordon. They emphasize the rarity of finding such a serene and private property within the city limits.

The sale of this Hollywood landmark coincides with reports of Samaha’s interest in potentially acquiring the Dolby Theatre, home to the Academy Awards ceremony, as part of an investment group.
